How to use Heat Transfer Vinyl Adhesive

When you are a creative person, you are always looking for new ways to use the products you already love in new ways! We have a few different ways to create with metallic foils on fabric and heat transfer vinyl adhesive is one of my favs!

How to Use Heat Transfer Vinyl Adhesive

So, I would like to officially introduce you to our Heat Transfer Vinyl Adhesive (HTVA) which is designed to be used with a Vinyl Cutter, i.e.; Cameo, Silhouette, or your favorite brand you use.

Cutting the HTVA allows the utmost creativity possible because of all the design options available to use with the vinyl cutters.  You can find 1,000’s of files to purchase on the internet and just import to your cutter.

Once you select a design and import it to your vinyl cutter, just make sure that you mirror the image if it’s a word. There should also be a setting for HTVA on your machine, so make sure an select that as well.

HTVA has a shiny side and a matte side. The matte side is the side you want to cut (that side is the adhesive).

Once you find a design and cut the HTVA, you will then need to “weed” out the design.  This means to remove all the parts you do not need and you should be left with a word or a pattern to transfer.

I used the word “Faith” for this project. Once it was weeded, I then ironed it onto my t-shirt.  I positioned the HTVA design onto my project and made sure I had it right where I wanted it. There’s no moving it once it’s transferred to the fabric.

Put the iron on medium heat and keep the iron moving as you are ironing over the HTVA. I like to iron for about 30 to 60 seconds.  Then you want to remove the backing material while it’s warm, just make sure that the design has adhered to the fabric.

Allow the HTVA to cool off a little and then just cover it with your Metallic Foil of choice. Make sure you have picked a textile-friendly foil. We specify this on our website in the description of each foil.

Once again, you will iron over the design directly on the foil (you can use parchment paper if desired). Keep the iron moving, use some pressure, and make sure you are on a hard surface. Iron for about 60 seconds making sure you have ironed over the entire design.

Allow the foil to completely cool off on its own and don’t try to speed up the cooling down process.  Once the foil has completely cooled down, remove the foil carrier.

There is nothing else to do… Just make sure to wash in cold water, inside/out, and only air dry (NO DRYER).

Have a ton of fun creating your unique projects for yourself, friends, and family!!

Foiled Whimsy Birdhouses

One day I was surfing the internet and I came across these super cute little birdhouses. I thought they would be super fun to foil because Metallic Foils make everything better 😍 So let’s get started with these foiled whimsy birdhouses!

DIY Whimsy Birdhouse with Metallic Foils

I found these birdhouses at Michael’s and they were only around $5 bucks each! They needed a little sanding here and there and then I primed them with our fabulous Bondago in the color black!

Once the paint dried for a few hours, I applied a layer of Foil Adhesive everywhere I planned to add metallic foils.

You will want to apply one layer of foil adhesive and allow it to dry for at least an hour.

Then comes the hard part…

Picking which foils to use!!  For this project, I decided on Copper Bark for the roof and Fine Line Gold for the sides.  These foils transfer very well, but where the wood was rough a little black paint showed through which gave the project even more character!

When you are done applying your foil, make sure to apply a topcoat to protect everything.  Next, I embellished my project with holiday greenery!

Foiled Whimsy Birdhouses…

These are super fun and you can decorate for any occasion! Make sure to take a picture of your project and send it to me @ 714-202-9356!

Stenciling with Foils

Here at Artistic Painting Studio, we have a few options of Foil Adhesives to work with when foiling on fabric. Today we are going to cover our Deco Foil Fusible Spray Adhesive. I love stencils and this Fusible Spray Adhesive is wonderful to use when stenciling with foils!

Metallic Foils & Fabric: Stenciling with Foils

I used our Hampton Medallion Stencil pattern for this particular project, but you can use your favorite stencil. We have quite a few different patterns to choose from if you are needing to add some to your collection.

Let’s get started…

First, you will need to spray the backside of the stencil with a Repositionable Spray Adhesive which will keep all elements in place when you are spraying the Fusible Spray Adhesive.

I would advise going outside when using the repositionable spray adhesives. Make sure you allow it to “tack-up” for a few minutes before applying the stencil to your project.

Next, you will take the stencil design you are using and position it on your project. Make sure every element is securely in place and tape down a barrier around the stencil.  This should prevent the Fusible Spray Adhesive from getting anywhere else.

Then you will shake the can of Fusible Spray Adhesive for at least 30 to 60 seconds and make sure it is shaken well!  Once the can is ready you will spray over the stencil design filing in all the openings of the stencil.  The Fusible Spray Adhesive will create a “white” stencil image. Then you will remove the stencil.

I would suggest cleaning the stencil as soon as you are done with it. We have found that Awesome from the Dollar Tree works great for getting all the adhesive off of our stencils.  I have also just left the spray on the stencil and scrapped it off later.

Allow the Fusible Spray Adhesive to dry for about 10 minutes and then cover it with your favorite foil color or pattern with the pretty side facing up.

Set your iron to medium heat and iron over the pattern.  I adhesive doing this on a hard surface, keeping the iron moving at all times. Use some pressure to make sure that the pattern is adhering to the foil.  Iron for about 30 to 60 seconds and then allow the foil to completely cool off before removing it from your fabric.  These foils are a “cool” release, so you need to let them cool off completely before removing them.

That’s it! Now you have an awesome foiled tee or custom throw pillow! I love to foil my jeans, jackets, and tees. I have even created a few custom throw pillows to match my home.

As for the care of your project…

Wash in cold water, inside/out, and air dry. Never put in a dryer!! Also, always make sure that you are using a Textile Friendly foil for these projects. We always specify on our website which ones are textile friendly.

Now go have fun and foil some fabric!

January Foil Club Collection

If you haven’t heard yet, we have a Foil Club Membership!!  This is such a great way to get some HAPPY MAIL every month & grow your foil collection. You are not going to want to miss out on the fabulous January foil club collection.

January Foil Club Collection

Our team curates a new collection of foils every month that work beautifully together and may also coordinate with a prior month’s collection as well.

Your Happy Mail will always be a surprise and features a lot of new foils that have not been released to the public.  These collections will provide enough foil to create some fabulous projects and maybe introduce you to some colors you may not have tried yet.

Every month Jenn has a special night for Foil Club Crafting Night showing how to use the foils on different projects and how they blend together.

December’s foils were so much fun to create with and you can enjoy watching the process of making a few different projects here:

As always, you will need to base coat your project with Bondago or another good acrylic paint.  Apply a layer of Foil Adhesive and allow it to dry for no less than an hour.  Then you will be ready to transfer your amazing collections of foils!

If you would like to become a Member of the Foil Club, we have two options.  Foil Club will provide you with 10 feet of foil each month. Which is usually 5 different foils that are two feet each!  We also have the Mini Foil Club which is only one foot of each foil.

Head HERE to find all the details on our fabulous Foil Club options!!

Custom Foiled Baseball Hat

A girl’s gotta LOVE a blingy baseball cap to throw on at any time! This custom foiled baseball hat was super fun to create and you can customize one to your taste and style!

Custom Foiled Baseball Hat

First, I found these hats on Amazon. You can find them HERE. There are so many colors to choose from, so you will definitely find one you like!

The next thing you will need to decide on is what foil color or pattern you want to use. This may be the hardest part, there are so many fabulous choices to choose from!

My project features a turquoise hat with the Leopard Teal/Blue Metallic Foil.

Let’s get started on the details!

First, you will apply a layer of Final Coat on the bill of the cap on both sides (top and bottom).  This will take a few hours to dry, so be prepared to have some patience with this project or do a few at one time!

The final coat will help the Foil Adhesive from soaking into the fabric. We want our foil adhesive to be as sticky as possible for the best foil transfer.

Once the final coat is dry, you will apply a layer of foil adhesive. This is going to be a more generous coat than usual.  Remember we are trying to get a really good sticky tack.  Allow the Foil Adhesive to dry for about 45 minutes to an hour and then we will transfer our fabulous foils.

Now, let’s grab our foil…

Apply your foils over the tacky foil adhesive (remember the pretty side needs to be facing up). Then you will scrub the foil onto the surface.  Make sure to use a super-stiff scrub brush for the best transfer.  You might have to scrub a little, pull back the foil to peek, lay the foil back down and scrub again.

Make sure to do both sides of the bill of the cap. You can change things up and use two different foils for fun.  Once you have transferred the foil to both sides, you will apply a couple of layers of the final coat to protect the surface.

If you would like to protect your hat so you can wash it, here are a few products to check out: Plas-Dip Glossifier or Kiwi Boot Waterproofer.

You can also continue to “bling” out your cap… I found some self-adhesive gems in the scrapbooking section and glued them onto my hat as well.

Have fun and make sure to text us pictures of your Custom Baseball Hat creations – 714-202-9356!

Christmas Door Hanger

There is nothing more fun than creating something for your own home and I love creating seasonal door hangers! I am so excited to share with you how to create this super fun and easy Christmas Door Hanger!

Christmas Door Hanger DIY

I started off with a large wooden blank. With so many possibilities, it was hard to choose which technique I wanted to use but I settled on using one of my decorative rollers.

I used our Texture Medium and applied a layer over the entire surface, this can be applied with a chip brush or trowel. Try and keep the texture medium about 1/8″ to 1/16” thick.  Once you have the texture medium applied to 100% of the surface area, you will roll the Diamond Fauxy Roller through the wet material.  Roll as many passes that are needed to cover the complete surface.  Allow the texture medium to dry and then sand off any high areas that are rough.

Next, I painted the surface with DIY Paint in Blue Iris which was a color that matched the Cobalt Blue Foil.  You will paint the entire surface including the sides and allow them to dry.

If you are using chalk paint as I did, you will want to apply a layer of topcoat to seal the surface before heading to the next step.  I applied one layer of the Modern Masters MasterClear Topcoat.  Allow the topcoat to dry for several hours.

Now it’s time to apply the Foil Adhesive…

You will apply your foil adhesive to the top surface area and allow this to dry to a firm tack which will take about an hour.  Once the foil adhesive is dry, you will transfer the Silver Metallic Foil.  I didn’t want the foil to transfer into the lower areas where the Diamond roller made the impression, so I only rubbed the foil with a cloth and lightly scrubbed when necessary.

Then you will apply another layer or two of the Modern Masters MasterClear to protect the surface.

Now let’s get started on the “Merry Christmas”…

The cutout was base-coated with Bondago base-coat and primer in the color black. Then I allowed this to dry and then applied a layer of foil adhesive with a foam brush.  You will pounce the foil adhesive onto the top surface area only and allow this to dry to a firm tack.  Then you will transfer the Cobalt Blue foil using a scrub brush.  You will also want to protect the “Merry Christmas” with Modern Masters MasterClear as well.

I then glued the “Merry Christmas” wood cutout to the door hanger positioning it a little at an angle so that it would fit well.

Finally, you can drill a couple of holes to attach a ribbon or twine for hanging.  I even created a fun bow to attach to it as well! Now go hang it on your front door to welcome all your holiday guests!
